This is a design for a winnowing machine capable of cleaning any of the seed commonly used in bird keeping I have been using it on parrot seed machine with great success. mine has a plastic front which makes adjustments very easy. It can easily be put together using any suitable material.
Front and back are made from any ply or hardboard, better still the front can be made clear plastic this will allow you to see winnower in operation. the internal struts can be made from any wood or ply as long as they are thick enough to take the screws. Any domestic vacuum cleaner will do the job. Very little if any should go into the vacuum cleaner they should all collect in the bottom of the winnower.
The seed and husks are fed into the top, it usually necessary to stir it with your fingers to maintain a flow when the winnowing the larger seed such as sun flower. The lighter husks are drawn into the chamber inside the winnowing and the clean seed falls straight through and is collected in a container on the floor
This winnowing machine has been designed by David Pinch who has kindly gave his permission to reproduced it on this web site.
Dave also has written a bird record program ( Aviary Base Pro 3 ) that records every detail of the birds, it is user friendly it cost £79.99 or £ 69.99 for the version without the genetics
