SOMERSET BUDGERIGAR SOCIETY

2000 OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW REPORT

Once again the tremendous effort by so many club members resulted in Somerset BS achieving another superb Open Show. A total of 1090 birds were entered and 920 benched; entries coming from all counties within the Western Counties region as well as the surrounding counties. There was also excellent support from South Wales.

Brian Sweeting had another great day taking the major awards of Best in Show and Best Young Bird with a fine young lutino hen which was exhibited in very excellent condition and showed herself well. He also had three other young birds in the Champion line up.

Best Any Age was awarded to another excellent lutino hen exhibited by the very promising Junior partnership Scott & Shaun Childs. This bird is a credit to such young fanciers, especially as it was owner bred. This partnership will do very well in the future.

Best and second best Champion Any Age was won by Bill & Christine Heale with two wonderful light greens. Ivor Densley was awarded third with a superb grey green cock which pushed hard earlier in the day for the Colour Certificate.

Best Champion Young Bird was won by the lutino hen benched by Brian Sweeting. Second best was a very big and stylish opaline grey green cock shown by Ken Spraggs. Third place went to a sky blue hen bred by Colin Parsons, a bird which has been doing very well throughout west country having already having taken A Best In Show.

Rob Taylor’s long journey from South Wales paid dividends, winning Best Intermediate Any Age with his grey cock, a good bird with excellent feathering. Stuart & Paul Griffin took the second spot with their dark green cinnamon hen. Third was awarded to Adrian Duck’s very good light green hen shown in excellent condition.

Barge & Smith won best Young Bird in this section with a yellow face cock. They also took 5th-best Young Bird with their sky blue cock. This partnership are seldom seen on the show bench which is a great pity as they have such good birds. Paul and Stuart Griffin took second & third best young bird with a cinnamon cock and hen, (brother and sister).

The Novice Any Age section was headed by Steve Rich’s grey cock which was shown in excellent condition and also took the Colour Certificate. John Crooks took second with his spangle light green cock. Third was awarded to G Moller with his Colour Certificate-winning yellow face sky blue cock.

The winning bird in the Novice Young Bird section was G Harris’s excellent spangle cock. Second place was awarded to John Crooks sky blue cock. Third was taken by the husband & wife partnership from Bristol, Jim & Liz Stinchcombe with their opaline sky blue hen.

The Beginner Any Age section was headed by Terry Paice’s Colour Certificate-winning grey green cock, an excellent and very large bird, which he should be very proud of. He also took second with a grey cock. Third went to Tony Westwood, who has just returned to the hobby after a break of 10 years, with a very nice sky blue cock.

Terry Paice also won the Beginner Young Bird section with a sky blue cock. P Smith was in second place with a sky blue hen and third went to local father & son partnership Andy & Brian Broom with an excellent opaline green hen.

Following yet another very successful season in the West Country and South Wales this year, the Childs twins had their best day to date winning the major award of Best Any Age In Show. Scott and Sean dominated the junior section taking the first six places in the Any Age section as well as the first two in the Young Bird classes. In third place was a very commendable young spangle benched by E Hooper. The Childs twins deserve particular praise as many of their birds finished well-placed in the Colour Certificate run-downs. They have taken several Colour Certificates during this show season with their own rung birds.
