DEALING WITH BIRDS

 

Purchased birds.

1.         Isolate for at least one month.

2.         Treat for trichomoniasis — may no longer he required

3.         Treat for Scaly face

4.         Treat for roundworms

5.         Treat for other conditions as appropriate

 You still can introduce disease such as Psittacosis or Megabacteriosis.

IF A PURCHASED BIRD GOES SICK WHILST IN ISOLATION - EUTHANASE AND POST

MORTEM THE BIRD. 


Show birds

 1.         Train to eat and drink in a show cage

2.         Only show once per fourteen days

3.         Only show three times in a season

4.         Only show for up to two days at a time

5.         Always offer water in suitable fountains

6.         Cage up for a time period upon return and check for stress induced disease

 If a bird is confident enough to drink in a show cage then it will stand to he judged.


 Sick birds

 Check all birds twice daily for illness and isolate any birds even if they appear to he ‘just moulting”. Removal of these from the pecking order can enable them to regain strength. If you are in any doubt then contact an avian veterinary surgeon. Local fanciers probably will have no idea and may misguide you. Advise over the phone is free. Treat only a specific disease with medication under veterinary supervision. Post mortem any suspicious deaths.

If any sick birds are “going to die” or are not offered treatment, then they must he euthanased immediately and humanely. No budgerigar should suffer.
